Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) is the largest children’s literacy nonprofit in the United States. The RIF program at Spoon River Valley until 2009 had been funded with 75% Federal dollars and 25% local dollars (PTO donation). In June of that year we received word that we would lose the federal dollars because we did not have a high enough percentage of free and reduced lunch students.
In order to keep the program we have been designated a locally funded program. That means that all monies for the program must come from local sources. It also means that we can still order books with a RIF discount. The cost for the program per year is $1120 for books and about $75 for incentive materials. Two books distributions, one in the fall and one in the spring, are held for students at the Elementary School As required by the RIF program, activities to promote reading and incentives (bookmarks and stickers) are part of each distribution. This year’s theme is “Go Green”
